Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was born to white and black parents. She grew up with her mom's side. She recalled that growing up she felt unaccepted by her peers due to the colour of her skin. Their parents were struggling financially and had to relocate 16 times to pursue her father's job. Russell expressed her feelings about how despite the difficulties, Russell said that she had always been creatively inclined from the age of a child. She wanted to be a ballet dancer and then to be an artist. At the age of 18, she started her first acting class. She used the money she earned from her job to purchase a vehicle and then drove to Los Angeles, to audition. After her money ran out she returned to work until she earned enough income to audition again. This continued for four years until she finally landed her first major television role.
